Is Matt Damon Left-Handed? No, He's a Righty

Is Matt Damon Left-Handed? No, He's a Righty

Is Matt Damon left-handed? No. Matt Damon appears on many lists of left-handed actors, but photos show him signing autographs and throwing a baseball with his right hand. The evidence points to a right-hander.

Damon is one of the most frequently named stars on lists of famous left-handed actors. We looked for evidence behind the claim and found none. What we did find, in press photos taken across more than twenty years, is an actor who writes and throws right-handed.

Matt Damon signs autographs right-handed

The hand a person writes with is the most common test of handedness, and red carpets are the easiest place to check it. Photographers shoot actors signing for fans at almost every premiere. In the photos of Damon that clearly show the pen, it is in his right hand:

  • Berlin Film Festival, 2007: a Wikimedia Commons photo shows Damon signing a photograph with a marker in his right hand
  • Invictus premiere, London, January 2010: a Getty Images photo shows him signing for fans with his right hand while his left hand, wedding ring visible, steadies the page
  • Toronto International Film Festival, 2015: a Wikimedia Commons photo shows him signing a notebook on the red carpet with his right hand

These photos come from three events over eight years. Details that a mirrored image would reverse, such as the breast pocket of his jacket, are on the usual side, so the photos do not appear to have been flipped.

Matt Damon throws right-handed too

Damon grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, which means there is also good evidence for his throwing arm. In July 2024, he threw a ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park before a game against the New York Yankees, alongside Casey Affleck. Press photos show the glove on his left hand and the ball leaving his right.

An older photo matches. At a celebrity softball game in Boston in August 2001, Damon was photographed making a throw with his right arm, again with the glove on his left hand.

Writing and throwing are the two tasks most often used to judge handedness. Damon does both with his right hand. Many genuine left-handers write lefty and throw righty, and John Cena is a good example, but Damon does not show that split.

Where the left-handed claim comes from

We could not find an original source. Damon's name appears on celebrity lefty lists going back years, and most of those lists give no evidence. Some pages say he has talked in interviews about preferring his left hand for writing and eating, but none of them name the interview, the outlet, or the date. We could not find any such interview.

This is a common pattern. Lists of left-handed celebrities are copied from one another, so one early mistake can end up on hundreds of pages. A claim that is repeated often is not the same as a claim that is verified. The same thing happened with Tom Cruise, whose handedness is far less clear than most lists suggest.

A few things may have kept the claim alive for Damon:

  • Mirrored images: photos and video stills are sometimes flipped in editing, which swaps the hand holding a pen or a prop
  • Film roles: actors use whichever hand a scene calls for, so a character doing something left-handed says little about the actor
  • Fight training: coverage of his boxing work for the Bourne films has discussed his left hook, but a left hook is a standard punch for a right-handed boxer in an orthodox stance

How confident is the answer?

Fairly confident. Damon has not, as far as we can find, made an on-the-record statement about his handedness in either direction. The answer rests on photographs, not on a quote. Still, the photos are consistent across different years, events, and tasks, and we found no photo of him writing or throwing with his left hand.

If Damon were a lefty he would be in a small group. Left-handers make up roughly 10% of the population, as our left-handed statistics page explains. The odds were always that any given actor is right-handed, and for Damon the photos agree with the odds.

Actors who really are left-handed

Some actors on the lefty lists have much better evidence behind them. John Cena, Angelina Jolie, and Julia Roberts all sign autographs left-handed. Others fail the same test Damon does: Jim Carrey also signs right-handed. For a wider view across film, music, sports, and politics, see our hub of famous left-handed people.
