Is Jim Carrey left-handed? No, not on the evidence. Carrey is on many lefty lists, but press photos from 2003 to 2024 show him signing autographs right-handed, and he paints right-handed in his 2017 art documentary.
An earlier version of this article said Carrey was a lifelong lefty. We rechecked the claim against photos and film footage and could not support it, so we have corrected the article. Carrey still appears on many lists of famous left-handed actors, but we found no photo, video, or quote that backs the claim.
Jim Carrey signs autographs right-handed
The hand a person writes with is the most common test of handedness, and press photographers capture actors signing for fans at premieres and on film sets. In the Getty Images photos of Carrey that clearly show the pen, it is in his right hand:
- Set of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, New York, January 13, 2003: several photos show him signing for fans on the street with the pen in his right hand while his left hand holds the paper
- The Number 23 premiere, Los Angeles, February 13, 2007: he holds a pen in his right hand and a stack of cards in his left
- Mr. Popper's Penguins premiere, Hollywood, June 12, 2011: he reaches across the barrier with a marker in his right hand
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 photocall, London, December 10, 2024: he signs a card with the pen in his right hand
These photos span more than twenty years. Text in the frames reads normally, including a restaurant awning and a street sign in the 2003 photos, a FedEx envelope in the 2007 photo, and the film logo on the barrier in the 2024 photo. That rules out mirrored images. We did not find a photo of Carrey signing with his left hand.
Jim Carrey paints right-handed
Carrey is also a painter and sculptor, and his studio work is on film. The six-minute documentary Jim Carrey: I Needed Color, released in 2017, shows him working on several canvases. In every shot where the brush hand is visible, it is his right hand:
- Lying on a work platform above a large floor canvas, painting detail with a long brush in his right hand
- Outlining a figure in black on a wall-sized white canvas with his right hand
- Working at an easel on a painting of a heart with his right arm raised to the canvas
- Painting a red portrait with a fine brush in his right hand
The footage is not mirrored. Brand labels on the platform and the lettering on the back of his T-shirt read normally. The film also shows him resting his chin on his right hand while holding a pen in it.
Painting matters here because pages that call Carrey a lefty, including lists of left-handed comedians, often say he paints with his left hand. The footage shows the opposite.
Where the left-handed claim comes from
We could not find an original source. Carrey's name has been on celebrity lefty lists for years, and those lists give no evidence. Some pages say he has confirmed being left-handed in interviews, but none of them name the interview, the outlet, or the date. We could not find any such interview, and we found no direct quote from Carrey about his handedness in either direction.
This site repeated the claim too. Lists of left-handed celebrities are copied from one another, so one early mistake can end up on hundreds of pages. The same pattern put Matt Damon on lefty lists, and it made Tom Cruise look like a more certain lefty than the evidence supports.
The 2026 autograph video
In early 2026 a clip of Carrey signing autographs with his right hand spread on social media. Because so many pages called him left-handed, some viewers treated the clip as strange, and a few posts used it to push a conspiracy theory that he had been replaced by a double. News coverage in March 2026 noted that he was "recognised as left-handed" but did not cite a specific source for that.
The simpler explanation is that the lists were wrong. The clip matches photos going back to 2003. Carrey signing right-handed is what he has always been photographed doing.
How confident is the answer?
Fairly confident. Carrey has not, as far as we can find, made an on-the-record statement about his handedness. The answer rests on photographs and film footage, not on a quote. Still, the evidence is consistent across two tasks, writing and painting, and across more than twenty years.
The odds point the same way. Left-handers make up roughly 10% of the population, as our left-handed statistics page explains, so any given actor is far more likely to be right-handed. If a dated photo or interview turns up showing Carrey writing left-handed, we will update this page.
Actors who really are left-handed
Some names on the lefty lists hold up. Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, and Angelina Jolie are three whose left-handedness we have verified.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jim Carrey right or left-handed?
Jim Carrey appears to be right-handed. Press photos from 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2024 show him signing autographs with his right hand, and he paints with his right hand in the 2017 documentary I Needed Color. The claim that he is left-handed is widely repeated but is not supported by any source we could find.
When did Jim Carrey discover he was left-handed?
He did not, as far as the evidence shows. There is no record of Carrey describing himself as left-handed, and the photos and footage we reviewed show him writing and painting with his right hand.
Does Jim Carrey's left-handedness affect his comedy?
No, because the evidence shows he is right-handed. Research on handedness and creativity is also mixed, so handedness would say little about any comedian's style.
Are there other famous left-handed comedians?
Carrey does not appear to be one, but comedy does have its lefties. See our guide to famous left-handed comedians.
Is Jim Carrey ambidextrous?
There is no evidence that Jim Carrey is ambidextrous. In the photos and footage we reviewed, he uses his right hand for both signing and painting, and we did not find him doing either with his left hand.
