Is Brad Pitt left-handed? No. Brad Pitt appears on many lists of left-handed actors, but photos taken twelve years apart show him signing autographs with his right hand. The evidence points to a right-hander.
Pitt is one of the names most often repeated on lists of famous left-handed actors. We looked for the evidence behind the claim and found none. The photos we could find of him writing show the pen in his right hand.
Brad Pitt signs autographs right-handed
The hand a person writes with is the most common test of handedness. Actors sign for fans at almost every premiere, so there is usually a photo record. Two freely licensed photos on Wikimedia Commons show Pitt's writing hand clearly.
- Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, December 7, 2001: a U.S. Air Force photo shows Pitt signing an Ocean's Eleven poster for troops with a marker in his right hand. He visited the base with George Clooney, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and Andy Garcia.
- Seoul, South Korea, June 11, 2013: a Korea.net photo from the World War Z red carpet shows him signing a fan's paper with his right hand.
Neither photo appears to be mirrored. The cast names printed on the poster in the 2001 photo read normally, and so does the Korea.net watermark on the 2013 photo. A flipped image would reverse both.
Press photos from the San Sebastian Film Festival in September 2026, where Pitt signed for fans outside the Hotel María Cristina, also show him writing with his right hand.
Where the left-handed claim comes from
We could not find an original source. Pitt's name appears on celebrity lefty lists and in trivia quizzes going back years, and none of the ones we checked point to a photo, a video, or a quote. We also could not find an interview in which Pitt says he is left-handed.
Lists of left-handed celebrities are copied from one another, so one early mistake can end up on hundreds of pages. The same thing happened with Matt Damon, who stood beside Pitt at the 2001 signing and is also right-handed, and with Jim Carrey.
A few things can keep a claim like this alive:
- Mirrored images: photos and video stills are sometimes flipped in editing, which swaps the hand holding a pen or a prop
- Film roles: actors use whichever hand a scene calls for, so a character doing something left-handed says little about the actor
- Everyday tasks: right-handers still hold a phone, a drink, or a cigarette in their left hand often enough to appear left-handed in a single photo
How confident is the answer?
Fairly confident. Pitt has not, as far as we can find, made an on-the-record statement about his handedness in either direction. The answer rests on photographs, not on a quote. The photos are consistent across different years and countries, and we found no photo of him writing with his left hand.
Writing hand is one test, not the whole picture. Some people write with one hand and throw with the other, as John Cena does. We did not find clear evidence of which arm Pitt throws with, so this page makes no claim about it.
The base rate matters too. Left-handers make up roughly 10% of the population, as our left-handed statistics page explains. Any given actor is more likely to be right-handed, and for Pitt the photos agree with the odds.
Actors who really are left-handed
Some actors on the lefty lists have much better evidence behind them. Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, and Angelina Jolie all sign autographs left-handed. Others fail the same test Pitt does, and Tom Cruise is the best-known example. For a wider view across film, music, sports, and politics, see our hub of famous left-handed people.
