What does it mean when your left hand itches? In the most common superstition, an itchy left palm means money is coming to you. Other traditions say it means money going out. Medically, the usual cause is dry skin or eczema.
The superstition has no single agreed version, and no evidence supports any of them. This page sets out what each tradition says, where the belief comes from, and which medical causes are worth knowing about.
What an itchy left hand means in each tradition
The meaning depends on who you ask. The versions below are the ones that turn up most often in folklore collections and popular sources.
| Tradition | Left palm itches | Right palm itches |
|---|---|---|
| Most common version in the US and UK | Money is coming to you | Money is going out, or you will shake hands with someone new |
| Reversed version, also widespread | You will pay money out | You will receive money |
| Indian tradition, for men | Money will be lost | Money will be gained |
| Indian tradition, for women | Money will be gained | Money will be lost |
The two English-language versions contradict each other, and both are passed down in families as settled fact. The Indian reading is usually attributed to samudrika shastra, a traditional system of reading the body, and it flips by gender.
No version of the superstition changes if you are left-handed. The rules are about the left and right hand, not the dominant one.
Why the left hand is linked to receiving money
The usual explanation comes from palmistry. Palm readers treat the left hand as the passive or receiving hand and the right hand as the active or giving hand. On that logic, an itch in the left palm means something is about to arrive, and an itch in the right palm means something is about to leave.

This is folk reasoning, not documented history. We could not find a reliable source that traces the left-palm rule to a specific place or date.
The link between an itchy palm and money in general is old. In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, written around 1599, Brutus accuses Cassius of having "an itching palm," meaning a greed for bribes. The phrase "itchy palm" still means greed for money in English today.
The left-hand rule also sits oddly beside most other left-hand folklore, which treats the left side as unlucky. Our pages on left-handedness in different cultures and sinistrophobia cover that history. The itchy left palm is one of the few superstitions where the left hand brings good news.
Scratching, wood, and other rules
The superstition comes with instructions, and they also conflict:
- Do not scratch a left palm. In some versions, scratching the itch scratches the luck away and the money never arrives.
- Rub it on wood. A common rule says to rub the itchy palm on wood, which matches the wider habit of touching wood for luck.
- Scratch a right palm to stop a loss. In versions where the right palm means money going out, scratching it is said to cancel the loss.
Does an itchy left palm mean you will win the lottery?
No. There is no evidence that an itchy palm predicts money in either direction. Itching is common, and so are small gains and losses of money, so the two will line up by chance fairly often. People remember the times a prediction came true and forget the times it did not.
Left-hand folklore is full of claims like this. Our page on left-handed myths covers the ones that are specifically about left-handed people.
Medical causes of an itchy left hand
An itch in one hand usually has an ordinary cause. The common ones are skin conditions:
- Dry skin. Frequent handwashing, harsh soap, and cold or dry weather strip moisture from the palms.
- Hand eczema. The National Eczema Association estimates that about 1 in 10 people in the United States have it. It is more common in jobs that involve wet hands or chemicals.
- Dyshidrotic eczema. A type of eczema that causes small, itchy blisters on the palms and the sides of the fingers.
- Contact dermatitis. A reaction to something the hand touched, such as a metal, a glove material, a cleaning product, or a plant. An allergic reaction can appear a day or two after contact.
An itch in only the left hand often points to contact. Think about what that hand touched and the other did not, such as a watch strap, a tool handle, or a glove.
Less common causes are not skin problems:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome. Pressure on a nerve in the wrist mostly causes numbness and tingling, and some people also feel itching in the palm, often at night.
- Diabetes. Itchy skin is a common symptom in people with diabetes.
- Liver, kidney, or thyroid disease. These can cause itching without a rash, usually on more of the body than one palm.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if the itch lasts more than a couple of weeks, is severe, or has no clear cause. Also get it checked if it comes with blisters or cracked skin that does not improve with moisturizer, numbness or a weak grip, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Frequently asked questions
What does it mean when your left hand itches?
In the most common superstition, an itchy left palm means money is coming to you. Some traditions reverse this and say it means money going out. There is no evidence for either version. The usual medical cause is dry skin or eczema.
What does left hand itching mean for a woman?
In the Indian tradition, an itchy left palm is a good sign for a woman and means money will be gained, while for a man it means a loss. Western versions of the superstition do not change by gender.
What does it mean when your right hand itches?
In the most common version, an itchy right palm means you will pay money out or shake hands with someone new. In the reversed version it means you will receive money.
Should you scratch an itchy left palm?
The superstition says no, because scratching is said to remove the luck, and some versions say to rub the palm on wood. Medically, scratching can irritate dry or inflamed skin, so a moisturizer is a better choice.
Is the meaning different if you are left-handed?
No. The superstition is about the left and right hand, not the dominant hand, so it reads the same for left-handers. About 10% of people are left-handed, as our left-handed statistics page explains.
Why is my left palm itching with no rash?
Dry skin is the most common reason. Itching without a rash can also come from a nerve problem such as carpal tunnel syndrome, or from diabetes or liver, kidney, or thyroid disease. See a doctor if it lasts more than a couple of weeks.
