Is Emma Watson left-handed? No. Emma Watson is right-handed. Photos from several premieres show her signing autographs with her right hand, and there is no reliable evidence behind the lists that call her a lefty.
Watson's name appears on a number of lists of famous left-handed actors, and searches for her handedness are common. We checked the claim against press photos of her signing for fans. Every photo that clearly shows the pen shows it in her right hand.
Emma Watson signs autographs right-handed
Watson has been signing for crowds since the first Harry Potter premiere in 2001, so there is a long photographic record. In the photos where the writing hand is clearly visible, it is her right:
- Elle Style Awards, London, February 2011: a Getty Images photo shows her signing a fan's book with a marker in her right hand while her left hand holds the page
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 world premiere, Trafalgar Square, July 2011: a Getty Images photo taken from behind shows her right arm raised with the pen as she signs for the crowd
- Beauty and the Beast premiere, Los Angeles, March 2017: a Getty Images photo taken from the front shows her signing a poster with a marker in her right hand
The photos span six years and three events. They come from an agency's editorial archive, where images are not normally mirrored, so the hand you see is the hand she used.
The hand a person writes with is the standard test of handedness. On that test, Watson is a right-hander.
Where the left-handed claim comes from
We could not find a source for it. Watson has not, as far as we can find, described herself as left-handed in any interview, and the lists that include her do not cite a photo, a video, or a quote. The claim is widely repeated but unverified.
Lists of left-handed celebrities tend to copy one another. Once a name is added to one list it spreads to others, and nobody checks the original. We have seen the same pattern with Tom Cruise, whose case is much less clear than the lists suggest, and with Taylor Swift, who is right-handed.
Several things may have fed the confusion in Watson's case:
- Mirrored images: selfies, fan edits, and reposted stills are often flipped, which moves a pen or a wand to the opposite hand
- A cricket clip: posts on social media in December 2021 shared a clip described as Watson bowling a cricket ball with her left arm. We could not verify the clip. Even if it is accurate, one sporting action does not decide handedness, because many people write with one hand and throw or bowl with the other
- Her character: fans have long debated whether Hermione Granger is left-handed or right-handed, and that debate is sometimes attached to the actor
Is Hermione Granger left-handed?
The Harry Potter books do not say which hand Hermione uses. In the films, Watson generally holds Hermione's wand in her right hand, which fits the photo evidence about Watson herself. Fans have pointed to individual shots where the wand is in her left hand, but actors switch hands for blocking, camera angles, and stunts, so a single shot tells you little.
The broader point is that a film role is weak evidence of an actor's handedness. Props are placed where the shot needs them, and actors adapt.
How confident is the answer?
Confident. There is no on-the-record statement from Watson, so the answer rests on photographs. Those photographs are clear, they come from reputable agencies, and they agree with each other. We found no photo of her writing with her left hand.
The base rate points the same way. About 10% of people are left-handed, and the share is slightly lower among women than among men. Our page on left-handed women statistics covers that gap in more detail.
Actors who really are left-handed
Plenty of well-known actors are well-documented lefties. Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, and Angelina Jolie all sign autographs left-handed, and so does John Cena. For names across film, music, sports, and politics, see our hub of famous left-handed people.
Frequently asked questions
Is Emma Watson a lefty?
No. Emma Watson is not a lefty. Press photos from 2011 and 2017 show her signing autographs with her right hand.
Is Emma Watson right or left-handed?
Emma Watson is right-handed. She writes and signs with her right hand. The claim that she is left-handed appears on some celebrity lists, but none of them give a source.
Which hand does Emma Watson write with?
Her right hand. Photos from the 2011 Elle Style Awards, the 2011 London premiere of the final Harry Potter film, and the 2017 Los Angeles premiere of Beauty and the Beast all show the pen in her right hand.
Is Hermione Granger left-handed?
The books never say. In the films, Emma Watson generally holds Hermione's wand in her right hand, though fans have pointed to shots where it is in her left.
Why do some lists say Emma Watson is left-handed?
Celebrity lefty lists are often copied from one another without checking. Mirrored photos and an unverified clip of her bowling left-arm in cricket may also have contributed. None of this outweighs the photos of her writing right-handed.
